Something New is Not Always Better

Outdoor product and the price you pay for new

Over the years, it has become apparent that products manufactured in the past were built to last. Designed with exceptional craftsmanship and high attention to detail, resulting in products that were reliable, long-lasting, and of excellent quality. In contrast, the products of today are often notorious for being low-quality, unsustainable, and disposable.

The reason behind this shift in product quality lies in the changes that have occurred in the manufacturing industry. In the past, manufacturers took pride in their craftsmanship, often dedicating hours and skilled labour to produce high-quality products. These days, there is more focus on mass production and speed, with little regard for quality or the lifespan of the product. Consequently, products today are designed to be disposable, with manufacturers hoping to sell more units rather than ensuring that their products stand the test of time.

Some Brands you should know

  • Filson - founded in 1897

  • L.L.Bean - founded in 1912

  • Cabela's - founded in 1961

  • Orvis - founded in 1856

  • Remington - founded in 1816

  • Winchester - founded in 1866

  • Browning - founded in 1878

  • Mossy Oak - founded in 1986

  • Hoyt Archery - founded in 1931

  • RedHead - founded in 1856.

Furthermore, there has been a shift towards using cheaper materials, which are both unsustainable and environmentally damaging. A prime example of this is the use of plastics in manufacturing, which are notorious for being non-biodegradable, thus contributing to pollution in the environment. In contrast, products manufactured in the past often featured high-quality materials such as metal, wood and leather. These materials are known for their durability, and when correctly maintained, they last several generations.

Another factor that has contributed to the decline in product quality is the desire of the manufacturer to cut costs. Product development is expensive in terms of research, design, materials, and labour. Cutting corners to reduce the cost of production results in poorly designed products with inferior materials, which inevitably lead to an inferior end-product.

“There's a fine line between being practical and being a candyass, which is a word that my father used to describe someone whom he considered to be the opposite of tough. ... Because I'm very afraid of becoming a candyass, I'll sometimes do things that I know to be impractical just so I don't have to worry about being a candyass.”

In Conclusion

Older products were built with high quality and craftsmanship, while newer products are often of poor quality and unsustainable. The primary reason behind this shift in product quality is the changes that have occurred in the manufacturing industry over time. However, with the increasing concern about environmental issues and an emphasis on sustainability, manufacturers are slowly shifting towards producing products that are environmentally friendly and of high quality. Hopefully, the products of the future will once again be known for their craftsmanship, durability, and quality.
